Der blinde Hirte

Blind shepherd a central role

A blind shepherd plays a central role in this Salzburg Advent carol. He knows about the prophecies of Micah and Isaiah from the Old Testament and senses the imminent arrival of the Redeemer. Due to his blindness, his other senses are particularly heightened; it seems as if he can read thoughts, perceive images and messages that remain hidden to us sighted people. The blind shepherd, who, to paraphrase Exupéry, sees particularly well with his heart, is accompanied by young shepherds. Together they meet Mary and Joseph and experience the arrival of the Savior in a particularly impressive way.

Traditional songs and tunes are given a special status

Shane Woodborne’s musical work includes sensitively structured compositions as well as three impressive cantatas that refer to biblical prophecies of Isaiah and also reflect the thoughts of the blind shepherd. Traditional songs and carols also enjoy a special status at this Salzburg Advent Singing. This is guaranteed by the soloists, the Salzburger Volksliedchor, the Mühlviertler Dreier and the Mühlviertler Vokalensemble, the Salzburger Saitenmusikensemble, the Salzburger Geigenmusik, the wind ensemble Juvavum Brass, the Salzburger Blattbläserensemble and of course our audience favorites, the Salzburger Hirtenkinder.
