Anticipation for the Anniversary Advent Singing 2026
“The Great Secret”
For artistic director and author Hans Köhl, the mystery of birth deserves special attention in the anniversary Advent Singing 2026:
“In my ongoing effort to explore new dimensions of Advent themes, my curiosity about the diversity of the world’s religions has grown, as has the awareness of the universal human search for the ‘great secret,’ which manifests itself most profoundly in the divine miracle of birth.”
Combined with the most beautiful musical and vocal sounds, this Salzburg Advent Singing will once again be something truly special.

Review of the Salzburg Advent Singing 2025
“The Blind Shepherd” (“Der blinde Hirte”) Captivated Hearts
In the 79th year of our existence, it was the convincingly authentic performers who deeply moved the audience, as did the heavenly voices of our soloists Elisabeth Eder-Marböck (Angel) and Eva-Maria Schinwald (Mary), joined this year by Johannes Forster as the new performer in the role of Joseph.
Across a total of 16 performances during the first three weekends of Advent, the arduous journey of the blind shepherd Jakob—brilliantly portrayed by Tyrolean actor Edwin Hochmuth—through the barren and hostile Dachstein massif vividly conveyed the profound sensory perception of a blind man. With his sharpened senses, he perceives far more than his young companions, Peterl and Kathi, who tend the sheep with him high in the mountains under the strict and hard-hearted innkeeper Stoana (Marcella Wieland). This contrast between the innkeeper and the shepherd Jakob—she blind within, while he is blind outwardly—created a powerful and skillful connection to the present day.
The audience was also deeply moved by musical treasures such as “By Gracious Powers So Wonderfully Sheltered” and “This Is the Quietest Time of the Year”, as well as the Ladin Rü Dla Gana yodel, whose unique sound marked an absolute novelty on the festival stage. “The song ‘By Gracious Powers’ is our source of strength and touched us so deeply,” wrote grateful long-time attendees after their visit.
Numerous additional enthusiastic responses from the audience and exclusively positive media coverage confirm the widespread appreciation of this production: “It happens to me time and again,” wrote the organizer of a travel group from Upper Palatinate, “you think it cannot get any more beautiful—and yet it was even more beautiful. For me, this has been the most wonderful start to Advent for over 20 years.”
