Relatives of "Silent Night" composer F.X. Gruber honored at the Salzburg Advent Singing

Long lasting loyalty

Ulla Gärtner – a descendant of Franz Xaver Gruber – has been a member of the Friends of the Salzburg Advent Singing for 25 years. She has now been awarded the silver medal of honor for her loyalty.

Ulla Gärtner from Bruchsal (FRG, Karlsruhe district) is a descendant from the family of the “Silent Night” composer F.X. Gruber, or more specifically his brother Lorenz Gruber, who was stationed in Philippsburg as an Imperial Austrian sapper in the occupying army. Lorenz married Elisabeth, née Deiling, there. In 1800, their daughter Barbara was born and baptized in the Pauluskirche in Bruchsal. After a military defeat, the garrison and thus also F.X. Gruber’s brother Lorenz was deported to Bohemia. Gruber’s wife Elisabeth died on the arduous march there and he himself soon died in Prague. The orphan Barbara Gruber found her way back to her birthplace Bruchsal in an adventurous way, where she married a carter in 1830. One of her descendants is Ulla Gärtner, who has been a member of the Friends of Salzburg Advent Singing for 25 years. She was awarded the silver medal of honor for her loyalty.
